Médecins Sans Frontières

Médecins Sans Frontières are going around the country showing a short film telling people about their work. They were showing a film about their work at Spitalfields recently.

I have wondered many times why them rather the Red Cross. They take great pride in being non governmental. But, as I understand it so do the Red Cross. The take pride in getting into places where no one else can go. They are mostly altruistic; as much as it is possible to be so these days. The doctors & nurses are paid what local people would be for the same work. Enough to sustain them & little more.

They do great work. There is no doubt about that. There are still huge area of the planet where poverty prevails. Areas of the World where people are on the move, where they have little to eat, they don’t have proper housing. There are areas of the World where the life we lead in the West in unimaginable.

In some ways, it seems like colonialism. Great doctors from the West descending on poorly developed countries. But there is a definite need for them.

The film they were showing was of Médecins Sans Frontières midwives helping with childbirth. This has seemed to me strange. It is treating pregnancy like a disease, which it most certainly is not. But I was told that in fact many women die in childbirth.

I like Médecins Sans Frontières. It seems to me that is made up of good people, spiritual people who do much good in the World & help the cause of peace over war.
