Svetlana Alliluyeva has died. She died in Wisconsin on the 22nd of November just over a week ago. The news has taken quite a long time to filter through. I have written about Svetlana before on this blog. She shared a birthday with me, February 28th. She led a sad & tragic life, going from one continent to another & back, finally settling as many Soviet citizens do, in the USA. Nikita Khrushchev’s son lives in America. He is an engineer. He doesn’t seem to have the same problems in life as Svetlana. He doesn’t seem to have led the same unhappy life as Svetlana. But then, Stalin & Khrushchev were not the same either & neither were their lives.
A child is not responsible for what their parents do. Svetlana was always known as Stalin’s daughter. Whatever she did in life, this was the most identifiable thing about her. She could never get away with that. Stalin was just about the most dreadful & evil being who ever walked the earth. Svetlana was a decent person who carried with her the stigma of being Stalin’s daughter & was always burdened by it.
